Transesophogeal Echocardiogram (TEE)

1. The standard echocardiogram.
            A. Performed by passing an ultrasound probe over the heart from outside the body.
            B. Uses ultrasound waves, which are not felt and are harmless, a motion picture is made of the heart as it beats.

2. TEE
            A. Provides clearer and more detailed pictures than a standard echo.
            B. The ultrasound probe is inserted through the mouth into the esophagus
                        a. Placing the ultrasound probe down the esophagus will give a much better and more detailed picture of the heart.
            C. Evaluates the heart.
                        a. Size of the heart.
                        b. How strongly it pumps blood
                        c. How well the valves are working.

3. Preparation
            A. NPO for at least six hours before the test

            B. Be prepared to do conscious sedation using all cautions and procedures with it.

            C. Nursing procedure much the same as the Endoscopy.
